One of the reasons the film feels so vile is that the people who populate the anecdote feel so utterly actual. In truth, the film possesses a non-linear memoir structure - it’s more a Pumpkin Pulp Fiction than a Creepshow copy (though the EC Comics connection this film shares with Romero’s classic gain them kindred spirits - and a big double bill) . The music scored by John Williams and especially the African music will stop with you long after the movie. You will also be impressed with the costume designs. The film was nominated for four Academy awards,including one for Best Supporting for Hopkins.

The DVD is top quality.The Widescreen(Anamorphic) gives us an fantastic notion of everything going on in the courtroom scenes and on the ocean voyages. The relate does justice to the expansive cinematography. It is sure and crisp, colors are vibrant. Nighttime scenes are intelligent as well. The 5.1 Dolby Dig surround fills the room. “Singin’ In the Rain” has finally gotten the “special” treatment this masterpiece deserves. The original digital transfer is stunning– both visual and audio. I’ve seen this film I don’t know how many times in theatres, including several screenings in the new 3-strip Technicolor. This transfer, as with “The Wizard of OZ,” is as cessation as you can regain to seeing a 3-strip print in a theatre.

Many reviewers have complained about the commentary track and it is the low-point of this edition. So skip it, if you don’t like it.

Instead, throw on the second disc, which is a goldmine. First, there is the fine PBS documentary on the Arthur Freed Unit, “Musicals Fair Musicals.” This is an often revealing 90-minute film about the musical films Freed produced. Plenty of huge excerpts, too. It tends to puffery, but not excessively.

Then there is a fresh documentary, “What A Exquisite Feeling,” on the making of “Singin’ In the Rain.” Watching both these documentaries, you don’t need the commentary track. Most of it was lifted from these documentaries.

Some of these are unintenionally comical today. But it is really a smash course in the history of movie musicals. (Were Americans ever this innocent? ) Others include Bing Crosby astonishing introducing “Aesthetic Girls,” Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney introducing “First-rate Morning,” Cliff Edwards (aka Ukele Ike, Jiminy Crickett) introducing “Singin’ In the Rain” with what appears to be every star then under-contract to M-G-M in 1929, “Broadway Melody” in a mammoth number led by the irreplaceable Eleanor Powell and abet from some of the best talent of the time including “eccentric dancer” Buddy Ebsen and the broad singer Frances Langford–the best number by far in this retrospective. And there is another whole fragment of audio excerpts from the recording sessions.

In short, this is an astounding collection that any musical or film buff should adore.

It is proper, as one reviewer illustrious, that the “Broadway Melody” number in “Singin’ In the Rain” is a flaw in the move of the film. Pauline Kael pointed this out too. She considers the film a stout one. For myself, I don’t mind, the number is too damned well-conceived and challenging. Again, thanks to being on DVD, you can jump to the next scene if you don’t care to see it. I’ve tried it and the film definitely runs smoother narratively. But I missed it, and played after the film.

If you like SITR, as I do, this is a must seize. If you’re fervent and have never seen it, rent it and settle for yourself.

Let’s hope that Warner Brothers does a 50th anniversary edition of “Bandwagon” next year with a digital and audio refining that equals or surpasses this. And a better commentary track. Bet Scorssee would join in the commentary.

“Singin’ In the Rain” was not shot in widescreen, but in the only format veteran for studio pictures before the kill of 1953. It was designed to be shown in 1.37:1, Which honest about the ratio of most tv screens. YOU ARE NOT MISSING ANYTHING. I wish you young film buffs would educate yourselves about the history of film aspect ratios.

He was probably in Fresh York over-seeing his legendary choregraphy for the recent stage production of “Guys and Dolls.” Which is probably why he got the “Bandwagon” assignment a year after “Singin’ In the Rain.” He did all the choregraphy in “Bandwagon” and the following year, 1954, for “7 Brides For 7 Brothers.”

Kelly and Donen worked in partnership on the choregraphy and direction “SITR.” And it is really impossible now to choose who was responsible for what.

SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN’s legend is well known, and concerns 1920s restful romantic acting team Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) and Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen.) SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN is a musical that even people who disfavor musicals esteem. Fankenheimer is a director’s director - something of an icon in contemporary American Film. He has worked with the best, and has made some of the most innovative and intellectual movies of the last forty years. While always a director of “brilliant” films, he mastered the action-film early in his career and to a positive extent this has over-shadowed his deeper (and darker) side.

On a superficial level “The Recount” is the last of the “full-scale” action films. They blow up everything in study for genuine, they smash actual steam-locomotives, and many of the actors are doing their gain stunts. In fact Burt Lancaster not only does all his bear stunts, he stands in for other actors too!

But unlike most action-flicks, “The Drawl” goes deeper. Lancaster plays the French resistance leader asked to discontinuance Nazi Colonel Paul Schofeild from leaving Paris with a inform load of paintings. “Let them have the paintings,” Lancaster replies. He doesn’t ogle the point in risking anyone’s life for a work of art. “But they are the soul of France”. And this is where the exact interest (and the subtext) starts.

Imagine your house is on fire. You hasten inside and you can attach your celebrated pet, or the Van Gogh hanging on the wall. What do you resolve? Well that’s the thesis late “The Protest” - why are these paintings worth dying for? Why are they worth killing for? (Incidentally Lancaster took a similar state a few years later in “Castle Hold”) . Lancaster could care less about the paintings. And Schofeild will waste anyone and anything that tries to discontinuance him leaving with them. Not only is it a clash of cultures, it’s a clash about culture. A Nazi kills to set the artwork his maintain ideology has called degenerate; a partisan kills to assign the art he has never wanted to search for.

The DVD has an first-rate commentary by Frankenheimer. He describes the tedious the scenes action, the difficulties and joys of this production, the demolishion of locomotives (and cameras), and the joys of working with Burt Lancaster. And he’s very declare about it. The DVD is also in the unique wide-screen aspect, opening up the image considerably.

If you’re a fan of the war film or the action genre, The Grunt is a must have. And if oyu fair like suited film making, then it’s aloof a must ogle.

This is the first movie I remember seeing as a kid. I LOVED it. It was my approved. Then, I didn’t secure to notice it again for several years (tiring, Blockbuster!) When I finally saw it again, I Quiet liked it. I like it as I write this very day. The music is obedient (the background music slack the movie that nobody really conciously listens to, but helps the mood anyway) . The animation’s genuine, too. And I ACTUALLY KNOW WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT! (How often does that happen? ) Eye, what happens a lot of the time, is that people blame colors they don’t like, or designs that are annoying, or WHATEVER on the animation. But it isn’t the animation’s fault! The plan the thing on-screen MOVES is the only thing the animators do, mostly. So, if you really want to criticize the animation, witness at how they Travel, not what they seek like. Do you gape?

I judge that, really, most of the reason that this is one of my accepted movies is that it is about BOOKS. When I was limited, my dad read me “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” and “The Hobbit”; things like that. So, naturally, I loved books and stories. This is practically the only movie I’ve seen that encourages reading so grand while quiet being exact. It’s sure that the filmmakers themselves (or at least, a lot of the people working on it) actually like to read. THAT’S really why I like the Pagemaster.

So, if you like to read, see this movie. If you don’t (you snort nincompoop), pause away, and don’t criticize what you have no comprehension of.

I first saw this movie with my acquire Mom when it first came out into the theatres. I am now 14-and I don’t care what you think- and I absolutely loved this movie.

I agree with the review by amazon.com which declares the “animation to be middling, but what can you say about a movie that encourages a kid to consume up a book? ” That is so moral. In a plan, this account reminds me of myslef…no, I’m not overprotective of myself or obsessed with statistics…but I do esteem to read…fantasy for that matter, and this pulls me serve into another fantasy realms that I cannot interpret.

Only other people who are like me in this device will savor this at older ages, but this is a must-see for all young children! They will savor this! I personally believe that it in itself is noteworthy better that some of Disney’s stuff. Delight In!

I’m a colossal fan of fair about everything musketeers related (seek at my other reviews), and this is my common mammoth mask adaptation. Kelly is easlily the most fun D’Artagnon to gape and the sword play in this movie is wonderful with his athleticism.

Of course, anyone who read the fresh would know that though it includes sword play it is the charaters and space that recede the yarn along, so in that respect this movie does a mighty better job than most Musketeer adaptations. It stays fairly discontinuance to the unique residence and though there is petite time spent developing their personalities the Three are more consistant with their literary counterparts than in, well really, any of the other adaptations.

Over all one of the most fun adventure movies I’ve seen.

This is a fun film stout of action and comedy. The players are fantastic - Gene Kelly as D’Artagnan, Van Heflin as Athos, Gig Young as Porthos, Lana Turner as Milady DeWinter, June Allyson as Constance, Vincent Imprint as Cardinal Richelieu and more. Kelly is delightfully acrobatic, jumping around as if his legs were coiled springs, swinging on ropes, fencing like a master - he is a joy to scrutinize - he puts Erroll Flynn to shame. Van Heflin and Gig Young are perfect as his comrades - valiant, dashing, as well as foolish and impetuous. Lana Turner is the sparkling and risky Milady DeWinter who seduces men to do the Cardinal’s purposes and can be deadly. June Allyson is the virtuous and hapless Constance. Vincent Note is marvelously horrible as Cardinal Richelieu - he uses people like chess pieces and even when thwarted he doesn’t wish to raze D’Artagnan but to recruit him. The King is Frank Morgan (the Wizard in the Wizard of Oz), a bumbling but good-hearted king who doesn’t quite know what is going on. The costumes and sets are breathtaking and the Technicolor is as respectable as it gets. There are some graceful exterior actions scenes along the ocean (undoubtedly the Pacific but aloof delicate) .

It is Kelly who pulls the represent together, however. He seems to be everywhere at once, so burly of energy and life. Although he is a bumpkin from Gascony he is more than a match with a sword for any man in Paris be he one of the King’s Musketeer or one of the Cardinal’s guards. He does quite a lot with his eyes and his facial expressions, a bit overacted occasionally but peaceful quite toothsome. Lana Turner has top billing and she is deliciously ravishing with a seemingly endless wardrobe of amazing costumes From the first scene, however, this movie is all Kelly’s - it seems a bit strange that he is so favorable in what is primarily an action film - but have no doubt he is completely convincing as the most athletic and acrobatic D’Artagnan ever seen on the hide - he is a bit like Burt Lancaster in “The Crimson Pirate” but without the trampoline. Van Heflin has the most serious role as the nobleman-turned-drunken musketeer - lamenting the loss of his treacherous wife and then trying to warn D’Artagnan of the misfortune of Milady, who loves him not and is far more risky than any of his swordman adversaries.

This is a version of this often-told tale where the film makers “got it suitable” - there is plenty of action, comedy, romance, intrigue, villainy, heartbreak all going on seemingly at once. The characters are portrayed closely to the diagram they were written by Dumas and this is precisely how they should be played.

I Treasure guitar guy! (Brian Haner) . Not only is he an extremely talented guitar player - he is also extremely Silly. He and Jeff play off one another quite well, and obviously appreciate one another alot. They’d have to with the amount of time they exercise together on the road.

We drove 3 hours to glimpse him preform this christmas prove and it was completly worth it! I recomemend seeing him live as well as buying his DVD’s, you won’t be let down!
