In 1937, before America entered the War, the Japanese invaded the city of Nanking, China. Most of the privileged people fled. The less fortunate were trapped. Putrid atrocities were committed. More than 200,000 people were brutally slaughtered and more than 20,000 women were raped. However, if it were not for a mettlesome group of Westerners who considered it their mission to support the people and therefore did not fly, there might have been even more carnage.

This worthy documentary tells this anecdote, based on the diaries and letters from those few committed Westerners. Most of them were missionaries and the one woman, Minnie Vautrin, ran a girls’ college. There was also a German businessman who was a Nazi. In addition to interviews with some survivors, as well as historical footage, the filmmaker extinct a staged reading of the diaries and letters of these Westerners by a variety of professional actors as a blueprint to bellow this myth. Woody Harrelson is one of these actors as well as Mariel Hemmingway. Jurgen Prochnow was cast in the role of John Rabe the German businessman who, at one point, wishes he could let Adolph Hitler know about these Japanese outrages because he considered Hitler a compassionate man who would not let such atrocities exist.

The filmmakers did an first-rate job of organizing a immense amount of material. The film was well paced, distinct, to the point, and didn’t have a wasted word or image. Most of the time there were tears in my eyes and yet the underlying anecdote of how the courage of the plucky few who kept the carnage from being even worse, turned the film into engaging account instead of letting it sink into absolute despair.

This yarn is a section of history that should not be forgotten, and a sage of inspiration amidst the despair.

Nanking is a truly colossal film. I give it nothing by accolades.

I, like many other Westerners, first heard of the Rape of Nanjing ten years ago when Iris Chang released her book Rape of Nanking. I, of course, knew that Japan had been at war with China and that the Japanese Imperial Army had done a number of deplorable things in China, but it was this book that really opened my eyes to what Japan did in China and had a major enough execute on me to get me dedicate my life to the notice of Japanese and Chinese history, literature, and film. While I have become aware that Chang’s book is overblown in some ways, blaming the “Shinto Sub Cult” for the ways the Japanese treated the Chinese, it acted as an famous catalyst for historians to truly dig into the lisp and unearth atrocities that had been hidden by not only the Japanese, but the Chinese Communist Party, and America as well. With a number of scholarly tomes, essays, and translations having been released now, hopefully the world will not only acquire a better thought of what happened in China, but why it happened.

Of course, more people are likely to witness a filmic version of the Rape of Nanjing than read a hefty tome, but unfortunately although there are a few exiguous release documentaries, and the films that have reached a broader audience such as Sad Sun: The Nanking Massacre almost revel enough in the gore and bloodshed to design the films more fit to be in someone’s splattercore library than as an primary bit of media.

The documentary Nanking was financed and conceptualized by AOL vice-chairman Ted Leonsis after he read Rape of Nanking on vacation and learned of Iris Chang’s suicide. Instead of objective stringing together news footage, photos, and films of the period, Leonsis and the directors Gutenberg and Dan Sturman casted various American and international actors, including Mariel Hemmingway, Woody Harrelson, Jürgen Prochnow, and Michelle Krusiec, to give declare to a number of foreign missionaries, businessmen, and doctors who suffered through the Japanese attack upon Nanjing, but did their best to protect the Chinese citizens and military deserters from the brutality of the Japanese soldiers. Also, there are a number of interviews with Chinese survivors of the Rape

Through their roles of reading the diaries of the missionaries George Fitch, Minnie Vautrin, and John Magee, the doctor Bob Wilson, and the Nazi businessman John Rabe, the actors give bellow to these big people who risked their very lives to set aside the people of the foreign country that had become their home. Through their words, and the stout number of photos and films, the viewer can vicariously experience the travesties they experienced which would shorten all of their lives after the left China.

Nanking is of course quite graphic in its detailing of the suffering of the Chinese people at the hands up the Japanese soldiers, but it also shows the strength of what a few can do against the oppression of many. A top-notch albeit horrifying film, it should be added to the libraries of those enthusiastic in history and the bitter relationship between China and Japan

The documentary “Our City Dreams” profiles five visual and performance artists - Swoon, Ghada Amer, Kiki Smith, Marina Abramovic and Nancy Spero - who have their homes and studios in Unusual York City. Each of them comes from a different share of the world and each is at a different stage of her career and life. Director Chiara Clemente spends not considerable more than a few moments with each of the women as they dabble in their work and chat about their backgrounds, the struggles they’ve had to overcome as women artists, and their individual views on art.

“Our City Dreams” is probably of greatest interest to those who already have a degree of familiarity with some or all of the movie’s subjects. For the run-of-the-mill disinterested observer, on the other hand, the movie will likely bear far less fascination. The pickle may lie in the overreaching nature of the film which doesn’t allow us to regain to know as noteworthy about these women as we would if the film featured only one or two of them, say, instead of all five. Individually, they certainly seem like graceful people but they tend to subtract from - rather than add to - one another when lumped together as a group. That’s not to say that there aren’t some lyrical and poignant moments woven throughout the film; it’s unprejudiced that we don’t feel we learn all that powerful about their art - or the influences on their art - in the short time we win to exhaust with them. In fact, the movie doesn’t even really scrutinize how Original York City itself inspired or informed mighty of their output as artists, which is, we presume, the intended purpose and goal of the film.

For some reason, The Lifeless Zone has always been one of my least approved Stephen King novels, but I have to say this movie adaptation of the modern is qualified indeed, one of the most underappreciated of all the movies based on the work of the king of fear. The film’s success is due in mammoth share to Christopher Walken; with a less safe actor filling the role of Johnny Smith, this movie could have turned out as flat as a pancake. Walken, the consummate actor, is mesmerizing here. It’s a complex role to play, as Johnny Smith has not exactly been blessed by the kind hands of fate. When we first meet him, he is a elated English teacher preparing to marry the woman he loves; a stormy night and a runaway milk tanker later, he wakes up to gain that five years have passed, his girl has married someone else, and he is all but incapable of even walking. If you consider this is a film about eliminating a politician of mammoth and destructive inferior, you’re not even half-right. While that is of course the focus of the concluding minutes, the movie itself is all about Johnny’s struggles to near to terms with his fresh life, a unique life which includes a shocking power to scrutinize into the past and future of those whom he physically touches. The first manifestation comes in handy, as he helps achieve a nurse’s exiguous girl from dying in a fire, but traumatic, soul-draining visions of scare steal a lot out of a guy as time moves on.

Johnny first comes to terms with his power when he agrees to benefit the police contemplate the identity of an elusive serial killer walking the streets of Castle Rock (which, for some queer reason, is supposedly located in Recent Hampshire rather than Maine) . This experience only makes him retreat farther into himself, compelling him to recede to another town and try to commence a novel life within the comfort of his beget protective walls. A traumatic vision concerning one of the students he is tutoring leads him to examine a original aspect of his power, and this discovery comes unbiased in time for him to originate a difficult decision as to whether or not to sacrifice his maintain life in order to prevent a truly cataclysmic event from taking region in the future.

David Cronenberg directs this bleak but bewitching film, but don’t seek information from the kind of gore Cronenberg is distinguished for, as this is not a gore-mired film by any means (although the deaths we do stare are heavenly satisfyingly presented) . The Dull Zone is a psychological scrutinize of human nature and a suspenseful thriller, not a fear movie per se. Martin Sheen leaves an unforgettable ticket on the film with his portrayal of as slimy and unsafe a politician as you would ever want to meet (and, as a side price, impersonating Elvis Presley’s hiss apparently goes over gargantuan among Modern England voters for some reason) .

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Dead Zone! Click Here

A lot of care and detail went into the making of The Listless Zone, and it shows. The atmosphere is dim and palpable from inaugurate to accomplish, and Christopher Walken commands the viewer’s rapt attention at all times. There are a number of very challenging scenes, particularly in relation to Johnny’s unique relationship with his passe fiancée, so don’t be surprised if Walken coaxes a slither or two out of the corners of your eyes. Many of the early movies based on King novels did not translate to the colossal shroud very effectively, but The Dull Zone is an often overlooked and very impressive exception.

The Expressionless Zone is the finest movie adaptation of a Stephen King fresh because it captures perfectly the essence of just terror: the haunts of the past mixed with the unpredictability of the future. Christopher Walken captures this concoction and presents a dead-on performance as a man who awakens from a lengthy coma to peek he has the gift(or curse) of not only being able to predict the future but to change it. The Stupid Zone works so well because most of it takes position in a miniature town atmosphere, which gives the characters the opportunity to fully form. It also helps to have a proper supporting cast with the likes of accomplished actors such as Anthony Zerbe, Tom Skeritt, and Martin Sheen among many others. And since the tone of the film is largely grim, most of the scenes are shot appropriately in winter(with minimalist surroundings and less emphasis on special effects) . But all told, it’s unprejudiced immense to witness a King adaptation that doesn’t center around one gory horror after another, but instead presents the monstrous unpredictability of the human soul in stark (almost Orwellian) terms.

You have to be in the suitable region of mind to be pleased this movie. The set becomes so confusing halfway, one can’t really snort what’s going on. Many will simply turn off the TV, but if you’re patient you will be rewarded with an fair provocative ending. Film has all the familiar trappings: heavenly scenery, lovely women, including a very sexy Suzy Kendall (looking a lot like Susan George) and some attractive uncommon characters. The violence is dazzling explicit, but kind of tame for giallos. And there’s very runt nudity. This is a gorgeous genuine rainy Sunday afternoon movie. Worth a examine.

“Spasmo” gave me quite a surprise. It has unseated “Seven Blood-Stained Orchids” as my current giallo from Umberto Lenzi, director of the famous cannibal movies such as “Eaten Alive” and “Manufacture Them Die Slowly.” Surprisingly enough, you wouldn’t mediate the same man directed “Spasmo” and “Eaten Alive.” There is very shrimp gore or nudity. What you do have is a lot of weirdness and strangeness from beginning to extinguish. While watching this giallo, I kept asking myself, “What is going on here? Where is this leading? Why do these people sustain acting so unique? Why are there so many plastic female mannequins hanging from the trees with nooses around their necks and knives in their bellies? ”

Buy,Download, Or Stream Spasmo! Click Here

The first destroy doesn’t rob residence until nearly two-thirds into the movie. I was beginning to wonder if “Spasmo” was truly a giallo. My patience was rewarded, however. Towards the demolish there are numerous twists and the bodies pile up. All the loose ends are nicely wrapped up. The plastic “dolls” are explained, and it wasn`t a fraternity playing tricks.

You won’t soon forget the ending of “Spasmo.” It will haunt my dreams for a long time. I never saw it coming. Whereas the set for “Seven Blood-Stained Orchids” was more linear and predictable, the spot for “Spasmo” was wildly unpredictable. (In all fairness, some of the death scenes in “Seven Blood-Stained Orchids” were truly shocking and original.) It is unlike anything I’ve seen from Dario Argento, Lucio Fulci, Mario Bava, or Sergio Martino. “Spasmo” is a truly modern giallo.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Spasmo! Click Here

Furthermore, Giallo queen Suzy Kendall (of Dario Argento’s “The Bird With the Crystal Plumage” and Sergio Martino’s “Torso.”) gives an great performance in “Spasmo.” Legendary composer, Ennio Morricone provides a beautifully haunting gain. The ocean scenery is breathtakingly gorgeous; the stone beach house is very gothic.

“Spasmo” is a must have for giallo fans. It has been made a permanent allotment of my collection. The revelation ending is to die for.

Darkseid’s obsession for humiliating Superman and dominating the Earth feature prominently in the three qualified multi-part arcs “Small Girl Lost” (Supergirl debut), “Apokolips…Now!”, and “Legacy.” Also paying tribute to legendary comics writer/artist Jack Kirby and his Fourth World is the underrated Jimmy Olsen episode “Superman’s Pal” (a homage to the “Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen” droll which Kirby traditional to introduce the Fourth World belief and characters) featuring the debut of the special ultrasonic frequency Superman signal study.

The Toyman returns with an “Obsession” for a barbie-perfect supermodel (a storyline which later concludes in the Static Shock season three episode “Toys in the Hood”), while injurious Kryptonians Jax-Ur (announce of Ron Perlman) and Mala (assure of Sarah Douglas, “Ursa” from Superman II!) return with “Absolute Power.” Mr. Mxyzptlk is the “Microscopic Substantial Head” pulling Bizarro’s super-strings in a revenge spot against the Man of Steel. The episodes “Unity” (featuring a Superman/Supergirl teamup) and “Unique Kids in Town” (featuring three members of the Legion of Superheroes) are magnificent tales that would translate well as special episodes of WB’s Smallville, impartial as “A Fish Record” (introducing Aquaman) was tweaked for the Smallville “Aqua” episode. Superman takes a trail on the dim side (under Robin’s tutelage) when he masquerades as Batman in “Knight Time,” while villain Ra’s Al Ghul takes on both heroes in “The Demon Reborn.”

As always the boom casting is nothing short of lustrous. Steve Sandor, who was the sing of hero Sunless Wolf in the cult feature “Fire and Ice” supplies vocals for Orion in “Apokolips…Now!” Veteran TV heartthrobs Chad Lowe (Life Goes On), Jason Priestley (Bevery Hills, 90210) and Melissa Joan Hart (Sabrina, The Teenage Witch) deliver Legionnaires Cosmic Boy, Chameleon Boy and Saturn Girl respectively; Sharon Lawrence (NYPD Blue) channels her Gwen Davenport character from NBC’s short-lived sitcom “Fired Up” for Maxima in “Warrior Queen”; Peri Gilpin (Frasier) lends her smoky vocals to Volcana in “Where There’s Smoke”; “In Brightest Day” (introducing Green Lantern Kyle Rayner) features the advise of Ted Levine (The Silence of the Lambs) as the most menacing version of Sinestro to date; and Miguel Ferrer (Robocop) voices both ends of the spectrum as hero Aquaman in “A Fish Yarn” and villain De’Cine in “Warrior Queen”.

The first time I had seen this film was the summer of 1978. I was 7 years traditional, really into the music of The Beatles and had to peep this movie. This film was not a tribute to The Beatles, nor did the real members of the group have anything to do with the movie. It was a fantasy film about the fictitious characters that The Beatles venerable in their songs off the “Sgt. Pepper” and “Abbey Road” albums.

The myth takes station in the make-believe town of Heartland where we are introduced to the unique Sgt. Pepper and his Lonely Hearts Club Band. Twenty years after Sgt. Pepper dies, his grandson Billy Shears (Peter Frampton) decides to obtain a novel Lonely Hearts Club Band with his friends, the Henderson Brothers (The Bee Gees) . The film continues with the success of the Lonely Hearts Club Band, the problems the citizens are having in Heartland with Mean Mr. Mustard (Frankie Howard) taking over the town and the Lonely Hearts Club Band helping Strawberry Fields (Sandy Farina) recover Sgt. Pepper’s instruments that Mean Mr. Mustard stole. They encounter many obstacles and hardships, but in the waste, substandard is overcome and everyone is cheerful.

This film was not well received when it was released in 1978. Actually, everyone, including the critics and the public, hated the movie. The film was produced by Robert Stigwood (of ‘Grease’ and ‘Saturday Night Fever’ fame) and executive produced by Dee Anthony. Stigwood wanted to perform his name associated with fresh day musicals and had sunk 12 million dollars into “Sgt. Pepper.” He approached the project with a lot of enthusiasm and publicity. When it was released, it was a substantial let down in the eyes of the critics and adults (who were teenagers when the modern “Sgt. Pepper” was released) who went to gaze the movie. According to Paul Nelson of ‘Rolling Stone’ magazine (October 5, 1978) “…Stigwood and Anthony not only produced one of the worst movies ever made, but also managed to trash whatever rock and roll reputations such seventies artists as Peter Frampton and The Bee Gees…” Two reasons for the disfavor of the film is the fact that no one spoke during the duration of the film (except for the narration done by the leisurely George Burns who played Mr. Kite) and stale Beatle songs were redone by approved seventies artists. The rush of the film in some cities was “…so short…that those who were lucky enough to blink may have missed it,” according to ‘Rolling Stone’ magazine (October 5, 1978) . I have never read a review on this movie from a critic who actually liked it. Only myself, my friends and my parents seemed to like this movie.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band! Click Here

While watching this movie and reading so many abominable reviews about it, I level-headed liked it and belief it was done creatively. Musicals usually have dialogue with the songs to relieve travel the situation along. In this musical, the only spoken words are the gradual George Burns’ narration of the storyline. The Beatles’ songs and the set are intertwined and that’s what tells and moves the tale along. The songs communicate to the audience whether a character was trustworthy (”Strawberry Fields Forever”) or abominable (”Mean Mr. Mustard”), it emphasizes what is happening in the scene (”She’s Leaving Home”), how a person feels for another one (”I Want You, She’s So Heavy”) . The songs also exhibit feelings of cheerfulness (”Trustworthy Morning, Superior Morning”) and sadness (”Golden Slumbers” and “Carry That Weight”) . What a procedure of putting a movie together by telling a record through musical dialogue! I don’t agree with the statement made by ‘Rolling Stone’ magazine that “…Sgt. Pepper is better on vinyl than it was on film.” I view that for remaking some of the Beatles’ classic songs, these artists did a qualified job. Some that I earn particularly suitable are Aerosmith’s “Reach Together” and Earth, Wind and Fire’s “Got To Collect You Into My Life.” The finale tops off the film with the entire cast and many other superstars such as Tina Turner, Bonnie Raitt, and Robert Palmer singing the reprise of “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.”

I saw this movie for the first time on television when i was very young - maybe 10? I’ve always remembered the movie - and I am the only person I know who did. Even my mother, who bought the album for me blueprint aid when, didn’t remember it. That is, until my obsession with proving its existence brought me to buying both the VHS and CD. This movie is pure camp. I thought it as a spoof on other musicals, melodrama, and the overabundance of “profitable versus dismal” provided by the contemporary Star Wars (the battle between Billy Shears and Maxwell Edison is simply ravishing) . As a bonus, the Bee Gees, Peter Frampton, Sandy Farina, and Frankie Howerd all do renditions of classic Beatles’ tunes which are to be judged separately from the originals. No one will ever notify “Lucy” like the Beatles - but in the context of the movie, Diane Sternberg does an exceptional job that is independent of the classic. Aerosmith’s “Advance Together” actually can have its hold with the unique. Personally, I mediate the movie is worth watching simply for George Burns’ softshoe version of “Fixin’ a Hole” - well, that and seeing Peter Frampton in that oh-so-sexy silver disco suit. It’s time to “Glean Assist” to movies that are fair dull fun, and Sgt. Pepper is a spacious starting point.

Normally I abhor it when people (including myself) write reviews for DVDs that haven’t even reach out yet. But I’m so angry for the 2nd season of Arrested Development to arrive out on DVD that I’m going to write one anyway! (Don’t wretchedness, I’ll advance relieve and update the review once I actually find the DVD.)

Buy,Download, Or Stream Arrested Development - Season Two! Click Here

This is, in my plan, the funniest exhibit on television. My current thing about this explain is how it is a “comedy for shimmering people.” If you like plain and “easy” humor, then there is probably tranquil some stuff in here that you’ll delight in… BUT if you like clever/witty humor, you’ll Appreciate this demonstrate. The more you stare it, the more jokes you’ll understand and the more laughable the jokes will be. There are even jokes foreshadowing other jokes several episodes down the road (e.g. Buster’s “I never concept I’d miss a hand so great” when looking at his weak hand chair in “Amigos”) . There’s no device you could ever net everything on your first viewing, and that’s why the DVDs are so astronomical.

While the 1st season is improbable, I’d have to say that the 2nd season might be even better. The jokes honest sustain building (so it’s even funnier if you’ve seen the 1st season) . The running storyline of Tobias as an “on call” understudy of the blue man group is sizable… even at the ruin of the season (well after that chronicle has ended) you can aloof survey blue smudges on everything in the house. The whole thing about Buster losing his hand is hilarious and contributes greatly to my current episode of the season, “Motherboy XXX” (which has one of the funniest endings I’ve ever seen) . I could go on and on: the Veals, Gene Parmesan, Mrs. Featherbottom, GOB’s wife, Maeby’s job, “Scandalmakers”… it fair never stops!

Buy,Download, Or Stream Arrested Development - Season Two! Click Here

FOX chop benefit this season’s novel order of 22 episodes to only 18 (allegedly so they could introduce “American Dad”… but there are even jokes about the crop, like when the Bluth Company’s order for homes is gash from 22 to 18) . While it’s disappointing to believe we could have had four more episodes, I’m more than willing to trade those four episodes for a whole 3rd season. This is the funniest expose on TV!

Over the past few years there has been great talk about the supposed death of the sitcom on network television. And if those preparing to mourn the genre deem Friends or its ilk to be the standard-bearer, than perhaps they are accurate.

But maybe, impartial maybe, with Arrested Development we are seeing the future of the plot comedy… and if that’s the case, things are looking up!

Arrested Development isn’t your standard “state up a punch line, shriek punch-line, listen to the studio audience yowl” present. In fact, rarely is there a station up or punchline, but rather keenly written and expertly delivered dialogue. And rather than the standard “Joey and Phoebe derive stuck in an elevator while Rachel and Monica view Thanksgiving dinner” storylines, Arrested lets each episode unfold in an intricate and involving manner with humor that ranges from subtle to sublime.

The basic premise? We’re spending time with the Bluth family, who, to borrow a phrase, effect the “fun” in dysfunctional. The characters range from maniacal (especially the Emmy-worthy turn by Jessica Walter as matriarch Lucille Bluth) to misguided (perhaps best exemplified by Will Arnett’s desperate-for-attention-at-any-cost Gob) . These aren’t cookie-cutter cardboard characters as you’ll collect on other comedies. Each is a challenging character search for, with flaws and faults and quirks unlike those seen in other television households.

Best of all - and perhaps the main reason to take the DVD - the reveal is (gasp) laugh-out-loud amusing and will be whether this is the first or one-hundred-and-first time you opinion the episodes.

Comedy, stupid? Not as long as the Bluth family are around!

Given that the first volume of HIS AND HER CIRCUMSTANCES was such a treat (considering that it’s made by angst-ridden Hideaki Anno and GAINAX), it would probably be a petite unrealistic to demand the follow-up to acquire all the wacky, off-beat fun and tangible emotions which made the opening six episodes so scrumptious. I needn’t have doubted; Volume 2 continues to pull punches in the forms of recent storyline elements, character development, and roller-coaster style visuals. Even better, it improves upon the entertainment value of the first volume.

The trials and tribulations of High School students Yukino Miyazawa and Souichiro Arima continue as the (need I say it) tickled young couple decides to forget about their “perfect” state and luxuriate in each other’s company. Unfortunately, this causes a negative impact upon their High School grades — Yukino is panicked to contemplate that she is now at 13th residence (while Arima’s only at #3) . Both are brought before strict notable Mr. Kawashima, and the matter is soon taken to their parents. How the two approach to terms with their feelings for each other, their grades, and the resolution to the conflict is both droll and spicy.

Matters become further complicated when a jealous school snob, Maho, convinces Yukino’s classmates to give her the cool shoulder, forcing Miyazawa to realize the consequences of her earlier attempts to “do on a present” for the class rather than revealing her lawful self. Adding to the list of mopish, envious, bitchy females Hideaki Anno seems to be unfortunately sinful for creating is newcomer Tsubasa Shibahime, a cute cramped girl from Hell(tm), who apparently knew Arima from childhood and becomes Yukino’s rival for Arima’s affections. Scenarios engaging selfishness and jealousy are not my hottest topics, but the introduction of Tsubasa is both howlingly laughable and effective. It’s hard to sympathize with the injurious tricks that Shibahime pulls on Yukino and Arima, yet it builds up to an outrageously hilarious demonic version of Yukino chasing the limited brat through the school halls. It’s easy to peer down upon Tsubasa as a rank, whiny wench, but we’re snappy given reasons to feel sorry for her. After all, how painful can it be to have suffered a abominable accident on skateboards, studied hard to catch into your childhood sweetheart’s school, only to peruse that he’s not the one for you?

One of the most exquisite sequences on this volume is the last episode where Yukino spends her summer vacation with her first correct school friends since Arima. Seeing them doing karaoke, sharing their stories at a restaurant, or pulling innocent pranks on Shibahime are so nostalgic it brings succor memories of when I was in High School. To a more dismal degree, the scenes moving Arima’s friend, Hideaki Asaba, a rather perverted hunk who delights in being a ladies’ man and showing off his body, is enough to buy abominable recollections of being in Health class with a bunch of teenagers making a astronomical deal out of sexual express (in similarly detestable perverted ways) . These kind of feelings, in addition to watching the interactions between Yukino and her friends, are what accomplish HIS AND HER CIRCUMSTANCES feel as authentic as true life, even if the multi-faceted artwork (literally!) sometimes reduces the feel to a cartoonish, humorous comedy. But I obtain this to be the only steady heart and soul slack the whole thing. I also must say that this wackiness works better than the filler episodes on NADIA did. The filler episodes’ stupidities and forced comical gags (not to mention plotting irrelevant to the record) hampered NADIA because it did not suit the indicate. This spot does not apply to HIS AND HERS, because the silliness and offbeat nature has more of a consistent feel, never reducing one to annoyance when the animation style changes from badly-drawn Saturday Morning cartoon blurbs to the typical Anime characters we’re primitive to seeing in Japanese intelligent productions.

It also feels somewhat like NEON GENESIS EVANGELION, in that there are a lot of elements to assume the occasional surrealness of that title, including shots of busy city streets, flowers, and monologues spoken over abstract images. This, too, felt a bit out of station in EVANGELION when it was trying to be a serious drama, but I feel that adding this kind of surrealness to the prove is impartial like extra icing on the cake.

The DVD features the same qualities of the first volume in terms of video, audio, subtitles, and liner notes. I should also say that I’m really liking the dub more and more. The biggest surprise for me was hearing Alexander J. Rose’s mutter as Mr. Kawashima. He’s credited as Leicester Tunks, but I remembered how deep, resonant, and impressive his converse was in Relate OF LODOSS WAR (as the Narrator) . It was a titanic verbalize, and I am absolutely ecstatic to hear him again. Even better, Angora Deb (Leaf from LODOSS WAR’s follow-up, CHRONICLES OF THE Dauntless KNIGHT) plays one of the novel co-stars, using her Leaf advise to do her recognizable, and she’s as expansive as ever. However, Lisa Ortiz’s delivery as Tsubasa Shibahime really threw me for a loop. I didn’t study her one bit. Given that I remember best as Deedlit from LODOSS WAR, I had no plan that she could enlighten a bratty yet sympathetic puny girl so impeccably. Well, she clear did note me deplorable. The more I hear the other cast members, which include Christopher Nicholas (Arima), Liam O’Brien (Asaba), and especially Veronica Taylor (Yukino) the more I glean myself liking their characters even better than the first time around.

In short, the second volume of HIS AND HER CIRCUMSTANCES delivers more of the goodies that made the first edition a delight, while improving upon it. I’m really looking forward to seeing how this expose unfolds, even if there are only three more volumes to go.

(Be clear to check the last episode for an absolutely adorable reference to MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO!)

Music, chronicle, character development - it all keeps getting better with this second volume.

The animation is nothing to write home over, unless you like experimental/limited techniques - which are worn to their best attain here. But level-headed - if you were expecting Ghibli, this ain’t it.

The stories are situational, introspective and so real-to-life, you derive yourself thinking of similar situations in your bear experience…comparing and contrasting. And it rings just - without any silliness, sappiness or insincerity.

You want anime for something that you can’t earn anywhere else - here it is. Precise stories, about valid people…

Starring Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, and Alan Alda, Purlie Victorious, originally a well-liked Broadway production, is the moving myth of a murky preacher’s return to his home in rural Georgia to claim a rightful inheritance and diminish the powers of his once served ‘boss’ Ol’ Cap’n Stonewall Jackson Cotchipee. As an activist film in the midst of the civil rights movement in the 1960’s, Purlie Victorious entertains viewers with a gargantuan area as Purlie’s persuasion convinces his young girl-friend to claim herself a long-lost relative of Cotchipee’s family. When the deception fails to work, rendering Purlie “dispositioned” to go into hiding. Remarkably, however, Cotchipee’s son, Charlie, intervenes to the couples assistance and hopefully their eventual success. Purlie Victorious is very highly recommended for its involving and progressive message. (sad & white, 100 minutes)

Ossie Davis was indeed a master storyteller. I saw the play on broadway with Cleavon Diminutive in the title role and Melba Moore as Lutiebelle. I saw the play on A&E with Robert Guilluame in the title role. But, Ossie was truly Purlie in every fiber of his being. The modern title of this movie was Gone Are The Days when I saw it on television many years ago. I was so taken with his performance that I taped it on a reel to reel unbiased to hear it over and over again. Now that I have the novel on dvd my children can obtain to notice what actual acting is all about. And they gain to behold ‘The Mayor’ in his prime. Yes, from the beginning Ossie knew how to ‘do the good thing’!
